When the component is smaller than the print on it

SMD components, conductor tracks, cold solder joints: in electronics, the quality of your work comes down to whether you can see what you are doing. With more than 5,000 customer enquiries from this field, the electronics bench is where our magnifying lamps are used most often.

The basics of lens strength are covered in detail in Focal length, magnification and working distance and in Which diopter suits you? – this article is about what makes this particular application special.

Which diopter for which job?

The diopter rating determines magnification and working distance – the two go together. The stronger the lens, the closer you have to get and the smaller the visible field becomes.

StrengthMagnificationWorking distanceSuitable for
3 dioptersapprox. 1.75xlargeoverview of the board, populating, longer sessions
5 dioptersapprox. 2.25xmediumthe all-rounder – soldering, testing, repair
8 dioptersapprox. 3xsmallSMD, fine solder joints, reading component markings

Our recommendation: if you mostly work on the board itself, 5 diopters serves you best. If you regularly place SMD parts or need to decipher component printing, go for 8. Lamps with 3 diopters alone are better suited to large-area work.

What matters about the light

  • Colour temperature: 6500 K (daylight white) shows resistor colour codes realistically. Warmer light around 3500 K is more pleasant, but distorts colour bands.
  • Colour rendering (CRI): from Ra 90 upwards, colour markings can be told apart reliably. Our 824X series reaches that value.
  • Freedom from glare: a ring-shaped LED arrangement around the lens lights the workpiece with few shadows – important when components cast shadows onto the board.

Stand tube or articulated arm?

At an electronics workstation the articulated arm has become the standard: it swings aside quickly when you solder or measure, and comes back just as quickly. A stand tube with a table clamp is the more stable and less expensive choice if the lamp stays in the same place anyway.

If you move between workstations, add a roll stand – that turns the table lamp into a mobile work light.

Frequently asked questions

Can I swap the lens for a different strength later on?

On many models that is possible. If you are unsure which strength is right, ask us before you buy – we will tell you whether and how the lens can be changed on the model you have in mind.

Are the LEDs replaceable?

On the LED models the light sources are permanently installed and designed for a long service life. A power supply, on the other hand, can be reordered separately.

Will the table clamp fit my desktop?

The clamps are designed for common panel thicknesses. For very thick worktops or continuous aprons, a stand is the better option. When in doubt, measure and ask us.
